Rotary is the world's largest service organisation with 1.2 million members, in 32,000 clubs, in over 200 countries of the world. Rotary membership is open to business and professional people.
The objectives of Rotary are the same throughout the world. They include the maintenance of high standards in business and professional practices, the promotion of community service, the advancement of international understanding, and the development of fellowship.
Each club is autonomous in its activities and has the freedom to select the local, national, or international projects it wishes to support. Members attend regularly at the weekly meetings of their own club but are also welcome as visitors at other clubs.
The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul P. Harris called together a meeting of three business acquaintances in downtown Chicago, at Harris' friend Sylvester Schiele's office in the Unity Building on Dearborn Street on February 23, 1905.
Rotary's best-known motto is "Service above Self", and its secondary motto is "They profit most who serve best".
The global headquaters of the organisation are located in Evanston, Illinois.
